Thomas Bernhard

Beton (Concrete)

Category: Fiction | Published: 1982 | Review Added: 07-09-2009

Rating: 4 - A top read

(Qualifier: Ages since I read this.)

One of Bernhard's most satisfying novels. I can't remember much about it, but it involves a woman's suicide in a hotel in Spain.

The novel benefits from being shorter than most of Bernhard's novels, and therefore more quickly paced; and I seem to recall that there was a smidgeon more humanity to be found among the bile and the misogyny. It is chilling and depressing, but very skillfully written.
